Being an Auxiliary Member of the Annapolis Royal Police Service (ARPS) is a demanding and rewarding volunteer position. Opportunities exist to meet new people, share new experiences and contribute to the well-being of the community. There are many Auxiliary Members with years of service who can attest to the personal rewards they have experienced. A comprehensive training program prepares you for your interaction with the police and the community. If you are a successful candidate in our recruitment process, you will be appointed as an Auxiliary Officer.
What is an Auxiliary Officer?
Auxiliary Officers are part of a very dedicated and committed team of community volunteers who are trained both in the theoretical and practical applications of policing. They are expected to perform duties when accompanied and supervised by a Police Officer.
What uniforms and equipment do Auxiliary Officers wear?
Auxiliary Officers wear uniforms and are issued handcuffs, baton and OC Spray after the appropriate training required to carry such equipment. The Auxiliary Officer uniform is similar to full time sworn members with the exception of no blue stripe on their pants; the word auxiliary will be next to any place police is shown on the uniform to show they are an Auxiliary officer.
Auxiliary Officer’s are not allowed to carry a sidearm on duty.
What are the duties of an Auxiliary officer?
The primary duty of an Auxiliary officer is to perform police duties when accompanied and supervised by a Police Officer. Examples of duties include:
- assist with Community Parades
- assist with community response initiatives
- perform proactive foot patrols
- assist with crowd management and community initiatives
- canvass and search with respect to missing persons
- assist with large scale special events
- renewal of Community Night Listing data
- attend community events and promote positive interaction with the community and the police
- assist divisions in crime prevention initiatives and kiosk information booths
What are the basic requirements to become an Auxiliary Officer?
- Canadian Citizen or Permanent resident of Canada
- Be at least 19 years of age
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- Possess a valid First Aid CPR Certificate (or able to engage in a class within 6 month of hire)
- Possess a valid Driver’s License (Unrestricted)
- Must be capable of passing a complete medical and physical examination, if required
- No Criminal Record
- Be a good character.
What are the expecations of an Auxiliary Officer?
- Volunteer a minimum of 180 hours per year
- Reside within 30 km of The Town of Annapolis Royal where possible
- Complete all ongoing training as required

- 3 Professional letters of reference
- Criminal Record check – Criminal Records Check Request
- Copy of Driver’s License and one other form of Government ID
- Aptitude Test
- Panel Interview
- Medical Exam (if required)
